C1 Driving Lessons in the North West

Do you drive a motorhome or a self-contained horsebox unit weighing between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes? Or are you looking for a change of career? Do you fancy spending your time on the road instead of in an office?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, you need to ensure you have the right licence to do so legally. Handling a vehicle with that much weight is a different proposition than driving your family runaround car. Forward momentum is greater, which means braking distances are longer. Such vehicles are often bigger, with the driver’s seat higher off the ground, which changes your range of vision. To lawfully drive one of these larger vehicles on the road—and for your own peace of mind—you must make sure you’re driving under the right licence.

What Driving Licence Do I Need?

The type of licence required to drive a motorhome or horsebox on the road depends largely on the size, weight, and type of vehicle. If you’re not sure which licence applies to your vehicle, give GJM School of Motoring a call and we can help you out.

Ambulance Drivers

As an ambulance driver, you will need a Category C1 driving licence at the very least, due to the weight of the vehicle you will be driving. This is the category for light goods vehicles weighing between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes. When an ambulance is loaded with equipment, medical staff, and patients, it often falls between these parameters.

Delivery Drivers

If you want to make local deliveries for Amazon or any of the major supermarkets, you will need a Category C1 driving licence to handle one of their vehicles on the road. This covers vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes in weight, which is not unusual for a fully loaded delivery van. You can also get a Category C1+E driving licence, which allows you to haul an additional trailer weighing over 750kg.
